I am a Florida girl, and I am lucky enough to be a
beach girl as well. Living right by the beach means that I have been exposed to
the harsh sun my whole life. I know when I was little my parents lathered me up
in sunscreen before beach trips, boating outings, and outdoor sporting games,
but as I got older and the responsibility of applying sunscreen became my own,
I hate to say that I was not as responsible as I should have been with my
sunscreen. Especially in high school-- we would go to the beach almost every
weekend, and all we wanted was to be tan. For me, sunburn always turns
into tan the next day, so I rarely put sunscreen on.
Around my junior year of high school, I became
obsessed with skin care and moisturizing. With this new skin care obsession
also came an obsession with sunscreen. I would put it on my face, my hands, and
my chest almost everyday. Still, I was not putting it all over my body.
College came around and I finally realized how
important it is to cover my whole body multiple times a day when I am out in
the sun. I still try to put sunscreen on my face and hands as my daily
routine, but sometimes I forget.
Now I am home from school, and I'm
taking every opportunity there is to head to the beach. Being landlocked in
Mississippi is very hard!! Two weeks ago I went to the beach with one of my
friends, I put sunscreen on before I left, but I happened to fall asleep for
about an hour. It was primetime sunshine, and oh boy did I get burnt. I don't
think I have ever been so burnt in my life. It was only on the bottom part of
my stomach and the top of my thighs, but it hurt SO badly. I am now even more
obsessed with sunscreen than I was before.
Here are my top picks for sunscreen protection!!
Please do not go in the sun without sunscreen on! Wrinkles and skin cancer are
not worth it.

Love this post! So great that you are embracing skincare at such a young age. I also love the Honest Co. sunscreen because it has fewer chemicals:)

Most people really don't understand the importance of sunscreen - but it really is SO important to learn it at a young age! I see people go to the tanning bed everyday and all I think are wrinkles, wrinkles, wrinkles! I've also known too many people with skin cancer to take it lightly. I'm moving down to Florida in a week so I've already started hoarding bottles of sunscreen - my favorite is the Hawaiian Tropics sheer touch SPF 30!

Coola is my favorite sunscreen brand - btw you blog name makes me think of the SNL song that's now stuck in my head.
ReplyDeleteOK, you go girl for promoting sunscreen along with sunshine! I've seen FAR too many horror stories of skin cancer around Facebook lately, so props to you for promoting healthy sun indulgence. (:

I wish I could take back the days when I was obsessed with tanning. I feel so bad for my poor skin and I am SO obsessed with sunscreen now. Thanks for sharing your favorites and for spreading awareness on the importance of sun protection!
ReplyDeleteI just recently got really sunburnt because I totally forgot about sunscreen at the start of the summer. But I just bought some so I should be good!

May is actually skin cancer month so perfect timing! As someone who has had too many near brushes, including some terrible removals with nasty scars left behind, I urge and applaud your efforts for sunscreen!

Wearing sunscreen doesn't keep you from getting a tan, it just prevents the harmful stuff from taking a toll on your skin. Most people don't know that. You are way ahead of the game! Great insight!

When I was younger, I never used to wear sunscreen. Now it's a must when I hit the beach or know I'll be spending a lot of time outside.
ReplyDeleteLove this post- especially since I have the worst sunburn on my life on my legs right now!! :-( I burn so easily, I always need to be re-applying sunscreen!

I really should be better about putting on sunscreen but I'm pretty good about putting it on my face! I really like the Cetaphil face sunscreen/moisturizer!

I couldn't agree more with this post! When I was in high school, I had to go to the dermatologist many times for cancer-prone birthmarks. It still impacts me today. It really is SO important!
